Funky Easter

Oh boy, we have a busy week up ahead! Not only do I have a good 30 eggs to prepare but I promised to manage some cakes for dinner and brunch. Yikes! The weather also did a full 180 on us with strong winds and lousy, lousy temperatures. Yuck! Bring back Spring please. To keep myself busy while one cake was baking I splashed on some colorful nail polishes to test out and decided to leave them there. I just love these colors so much and with the dots it’s like I’m wearing tiny Easter Eggs. Trying to find the fun in everything ^^

Vanilla Sky

The sun is back in full swing and so are the fresh desserts. Since my fridge is pretty much empty ( groceries need to be done asap! ) I whipped up some cream in a blender with some fresh peaches and used canned peaches for decoration. Gotta love those syrups that get into the dessert when it is in the fridge for a while. Yes, we are ready for summer over here ^^

Colorful Taxes

There is something really depressing about doing your tax returns. It’s like you are suddenly confronted with all the money you spent with a big pile of receipts and you realize what else you could have done with it if you only saved up some, or didn’t get lunch there, or avoided so much groceries. After finishing and making ( yet another ) commitment never to waste money ever again I decided to go out and spend some time with family and strong tea. ¬†To cheer myself up I splurged on some colors in the makeup today and it turned out… okay. Sometimes pinks and purples make me feel better, and today was not that day. Perhaps I should do something silly with dinner tonight to make things better? ūüôā

Lazy Monday Afternoon

Monday is the day people in general love to hate: it’s boring, it marks the beginning of yet another week of work/school/obligations and we would rather have it gone from our schedule. But for me it’s hard to hate on a beautiful day like this, especially when the temperature is rising to summery levels. Instead I finished some chores, did some preparations for dinner and by noon I was getting lazy. For lunch I only bothered to chop up some iceberg lettuce, a tomato and cooked 2 eggs and nestled myself on the balcony. Yes, lazy is the the way to deal with Monday ^^

The dressing was a breeze: 1 tsp of mayo, 1 tsp of sour cream, some dill, chopped parsley and sea salt. Enjoyable is an understatement!

It’s a big, big day!

The weather is so pretty today that I spent my afternoon on the balcony making a set that hopefully would make Effie proud. Not even a headache could kill this mood ^^ Inspired by the nails in the Capitol Couture gif on their page. Totally gonna rock them this weekend!

Late evening nom noms

It has been a while since we sat down with friends and had dinner. Every now and then we get together to chat, eat and have a good time, and most of the time (if not always) I’m the one doing the cooking. There is nothing more fun then making awesome food, there is great deal of satisfaction when the house is filled with the scents of a great dish. It’s so inviting! We didn’t eat Mexican food for a while so I decided do make something simple yet delicious: tortillas, fresh veggies, sour cream, guacamole and a mind blowing spiced chicken.

Needless to say I was very happy with the results and so was the gang. After a good 4 tortilla’s for every person and endless plates full of veggies we were done for the night. ¬†With eating that is. I believe it was 5 :30 AM when we said our goodbyes and I finally found my bed. Yes, we will be doing this again very soon! Although perhaps with less wine ^^

In a galaxy far, far away

After a good week of anticipation finally my nail sets arrived! Bless eBay and it’s various sellers where I found these and I’m grateful to my friend in the UK who forwarded them to me. I had so much fun with these already, my first creation is the infamous galaxy nail art that I found online, ¬†especially the one done by cutepolish ( that is one talented lady, I’m telling you!)

It took no time at all and I’m so pleased with the results. I will donate this pair to a friend of mine but I’m pretty sure she will get asked about them so will make more in the weeks to come.

When in doubt, go online

Sometimes I just don’t know what to do with makeup, today was one of those days. And when you have a blank mind I turn to my dear computer to find something nice. ¬†Which almost always brings me to my gigantic folder of pictures I have assembled over the years and my best-friend-on-uninspired-days, Google.

I’m ¬†a huge fan of Effie, her style is just so over the top and colorful that I’m almost obligated to like it. But it’s not certainly something that can be worn in our society yet ( or could it, maybe I should just try?). Case in point:

The makeup is pretty unusual but with a few tweaks it’s totally ‘wearable’ and even perfect for a day in spring as sunny as ours was. So I managed to tone it down without losing most of it’s unique vibe.

A shimmery yellow at the corner, green in the center and dark purple at the bottom lash line and the eccentric look turns into something cute and colorful without going into WTF-mode. It helped not to drag the colors all the way up to the brow also, I really doubt I would have been able to pull that off ^^.  I think she will be a great source of inspiration for me in the years to come.

Farewell Winter

Spring is upon us and with that new opportunities, fresh flowers, spring colors and scents. I was thinking today that there are only a few things I will miss about winter: Christmas, clean and crisp air, and of course the food.

In honor of winters past I made a batch of chocolate rum cakes, with the warmth of rum soaked sultanas, cinnamon and cocoa. The best way to say adieu and so simple to make.

  • 125 grams of self-rising flour
  • 100 grams of plain all-purpose flour
  • 25 grams of cocoa
  • 1 tsp of baking powder
  • 1 pitch of salt
  • 1 tsp of grounded cinnamon
  • 175 grams sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 200 ml milk or buttermilk
  • 75 ml of vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp of rum extract
  • 75 ml of rum
  • 100 grams of sultanas

  • Place the sultanas in a bowl and soak them with the rum for at least 30 minutes.
  • Mix the dry ingredients in a bowl lightly, for best results sift everything into the bowl.
  • Add the wet ingredients and the egg to the dry ingredients and mix until everything is combined in a smooth batter.
  • Add the sultanas, make sure to squeeze them so they are not too wet.
  • Bake in the oven on 225 C for 25 minutes.
  • Leave them to cool on a rack and sprinkle with some powdered sugar.

Creative Bubbles!

With the upcoming premiere of The Hunger Games it is easy to get the creative juices flowing! The marketing team of The Capitol have done wonders so far in making Panem come alive. From the Capitol Guide to the Capitol Couture site, everything is set in place to bedazzle us with this extraordinary world.

Which brings us to the ultimate source for Capitol Couture, Effie Trinket. Her nails in the promo gif are absolutely stunning and I will be recreating them soon. How can you not when they are the perfect example of glamour in style. Below the style sheet I will be using for inspiration.
